Volunteering at Safe Harbor
There are many ways you lend your support Safe Harbor Animal
Sanctuary. The most important requirements for becoming a Safe
Harbor Volunteer are a love of animals and a desire to make
a difference.
Safe
Harbor Volunteers fall into two general categories, "Direct
Care" volunteers and "We Care" volunteers. As
the name implies, Direct Care Volunteers work at the Sanctuary
in direct contact with the population. We Care volunteers perform
a variety of very important functions off site.
Direct Care Volunteers
Because volunteers work in many areas of the Sanctuary facility,
you'll have the chance to "put your best paw forward"
with owners searching for their lost pet, families choosing
a new best friend, and, of course, with the animals. Realizing
that not everyone with a loving, generous heart has the same
physical capabilities, we have divided our Volunteer Staffers
into categories.
Scoopers
Theres a lot of physical activity associated with caring
for a large cat population. Scooper Direct Care
volunteers feed, water, scoop litter boxes, groom pets, wash
dishes, sweep/scrub floors, do laundry, and socialize pets.
Scooper Volunteers must be physically capable
of performing these duties.
Volunteers
for this all-important job may choose to schedule one or more
shifts a week. Two shifts a day, 7-days a week, must be filled,
so you can see that there is a dramatic need for your help.
Each shift is two hours in length. A.M. Shift
volunteers can select a time of arrival between 8 a.m. and
12 p.m. that is convenient for them. P.M. Shift
volunteers set a time of arrival between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m.
Foster Folks
Have a heart and a homestead capable of temporarily harboring
a cat or dog, kitten or puppy, or even a whole litter? Then
consider joining our Foster
Parent Program. We sequester every animal that comes into
the shelter, so we sometimes run out of quarantine areas,
particularly at the height of litter season. And
because the sanctuary does not yet include long term facilities
for dogs, we have a special need for Foster families who can
accommodate dogs of various sizes while we seek permanent
placements for them. See the Safe
Harbor Foster Care Program for details and an application.
Special Staffing Need!
Safe Harbor is open to the public on Saturdays between 9
and 11 a.m.. At that time, one staffer is required who is
capable of representing Safe Harbor to the public, as well
as performing one or more of the Direct Care Volunteer functions.
Two-hour shifts are available.
We Care Volunteers:
The TechSquad
Have computer, writing, or graphic design skills? Then you
might be the person we need to help design flyers, write newspaper
articles, or create other promotional and merchandising items.
Good with a camera and digital image manipulation? Then taking
and preparing photographs of adoptable felines to post on
our website might be the job for you. We could also use help
with website maintenance, email correspondence, and other
electronic/computer related jobs that can all be performed
from the comfort of your own home!
Sponsors
If Fundraising is your forte, or if you have goods, services,
or cash you can spare, consider becoming a Safe Harbor Sponsor.
See the Donating to Safe Harbor brochure for details on Donations,
Sponsorship Levels, and Fundraising opportunities.
Guidelines & Committments
Volunteer Staff assignments are made on a monthly basis, so
volunteers must be able to commit to a schedule of volunteer
times consisting of at least two hours a week for a minimum
of one month.
A volunteer MUST be dependable! Once a commitment has been
made to a specific schedule, the volunteer is expected to be
at the Sanctuary at their appointed time or make arrangements
for another staff volunteer to work in their place.
Volunteers must be 16 years or older to volunteer. Junior Volunteers
(anyone younger than 16) must be accompanied by an adult who
is a trained Volunteer.
Civic organizations are welcome to volunteer to fulfill staffing
assignments.
Interested applicants should submit a Volunteer
Application. An interview with the Sanctuary Director will
be followed by an individual or group Orientation Session. Participating
in a Volunteer Orientation Session is required.
