Before You Adopt

The goal of the Safe Harbor Animal Sanctuary pet adoption program is to place as many of the animals surrendered to us as possible. Please consider the following issues before adopting any animal.

Commitment

When selecting a pet, please realize that life expectancies for cats range from 10 to 18 years. Are you and your family prepared to make this lengthy commitment to the animal you are now adopting? Pet ownership also includes responsibilities for training, veterinary care and other things necessary for the pet to lead a comfortable, happy life.

Behavior

Many of the animals in the sanctuary have previous life histories that are unknown to us. Therefore, undesirable behaviors may be present that could show up when you get the animal home. Are you prepared for the possible necessity to deal with scratching or house soiling during the time the animal is adjusting to your home. Such behaviors are correctable, but a commitment is required on your part, as the new guardian, to teach the pet. You should contact Safe Harbor if you have any questions or concerns.

Expense

Pet ownership comes with some built-in expenses. Consider the following expenses and how they could affect your household budget: Food per month, Shots per year, Spay/Neuter, Other vet care, Carrying crate, Grooming equipment, Collar/I.D. tag, Litter box, Litter per month, Scratching post, Toys

Health

Animals in our sanctuary could have been exposed to a variety of health concerns while at-large or in this facility. While we make every effort to adopt a healthy pet to you, adoptive pet parents should be prepared take their new pet for a First Care Visit to determine that your new pet is a healthy one. Adoptive owners are free to take their pet to the veterinarian of their choice. However, at the time of adoption, you will be given a list of local veterinarians who provide First Visit discounts to Safe Harbor adoptees.

Confinement

Because indoor cats live longer, we recommend that all feline adoptions be cared for as indoor pets.

Housing Accommodations

In what type of housing do you live? If renting, are there pet rules? Do you have a rental agreement for pets? Is there a pet deposit? Have you checked with the landlord for permission? Is there a limit on size and number of pets? If living in a house, how large is the yard? Is it fenced?

Children/Household Members/Other Pets

Do you have children? Are any of them allergic to pets? Are there other household members, such as elderly, disabled? Are they looking forward to a new pet? Do you have other pets? Will the new pet be compatible with your other pets?
